The story
I chose the camping shelf because it was flat, then stayed because the water below it held the entire evening sky. The canoe made a soft knock against the bank. I moved the rope twice before the sound disappeared. Small repairs matter when everything else is quiet.
The kettle took its time. I laid the spoon lure beside the notebook and found a reed seed tucked in the canvas bag. It had travelled further than I had intended to go. Beyond the lantern, the river changed from jade to purple without asking for attention.
I wrote down the things I had brought back: a sketch, a seed, dry socks and a better understanding of the bend. The list made a satisfactory catch report. A fish moved somewhere in the darkness, but I had already put the rod away.
A day can finish well without one more attempt.
